Utah hosts Memphis for their season opener on Wednesday night and hopes to improve upon their defense, which allowed opponents an average of 112.8 points per game last season, the worst mark in the NBA. Limiting turnovers and getting back on defense will be key, which will be put through its paces against a Memphis team which ranked first last season for possessions that began with transition plays while second for points added via these types of plays.
Memphis will look different this season. They struggled with injuries and suspensions last season, losing 51 games as a result. Under new coach and star Ja Morant's leadership, Ziaire Williams, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr will enjoy much greater success this time around.
The Memphis Grizzlies made a major upgrade in their frontcourt with the draft of 7'4" Purdue center Zach Edey, who has proven his worth during preseason play and should play an instrumental role defending Memphis' paint this year. Walker Kessler has shown impressive promise during preseason for Utah as well and could see increased playing time due to Jaren Jackson being out. Walker would match up well against Edey who excels at offensive rebounding; pairing well against both should help the Grizzlies win battles over Memphis paint battles this year.
