This contest pits two teams with strong defenses but underperforming offenses. Bill Connelly's SP+ rankings place both of these sides near the bottom half of league play; thus making this game an opportunity for both to make strides forward.
Rutgers features an effective running attack led by Kyle Monangai and Raheem Blackshear, with strong pass game play from QB Gavin Wimsatt who poses a significant threat if left unchecked. Their secondary should do their best in stopping Virginia Tech's powerful rushing attack;
Tech's rushing attack has been very strong this year and Kyron Drones' return has certainly contributed. Drones is an incredibly capable runner who can escape pressure and run past defenses with ease; his 5.3 yards per carry against Temple was excellent evidence of that fact and shows great promise as an impact player for this team.
The Hokies must do a better job at maintaining drives and taking better care with the ball. Their struggle against Purdue must be addressed, while they also need to limit busted drives with more effective defensive play.
Hokies need a win to prevent their season from collapsing further - otherwise, they would enter their bye week at 3-9.
