As they kickoff their season against Penn State, the Mountaineers are popular upset picks to surprise. Penn State is ranked and will look to make an early statement here; while last season the Mountaineers surprised everyone by going 9-4 against all expectations thanks to an effective running game and defensive organization.
Penn State was one of the top-10 defenses in 2022 and still features many of those same players in 2023, led by Lee Kpoga and his linebacking corps - this unit should help stop runs while creating turnovers and providing some turnover-generating plays. The Mountaineers will have their work cut out against this formidable defense from Penn State.
Penn State's offense is also strong, and with quarterback Drew Allar in place this should help elevate this unit to become one of the premier squads nationwide. Allar boasts some tremendous talent around him and can throw deep passes. However, to truly maximize this offense Penn State must get more from its wide receivers this year.
West Virginia's run game will be difficult to contain this season. They averaged over seven yards per carry last season with Jahiem White being their star performer at running back. Running back Garrett Greene can also be an impressive force in the passing game as he consistently managed an average catch rate of nearly nine yards last year.
