Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach PJ Fleck and his squad have started off 2-0 and now stand as 2.5 point favorites against Iowa on Saturday night at home. Minnesota boasts top-10 defense, while their potent offense could pose challenges to any opponent, including Iowa.
Iowa dropped their opener 19-17 against North Carolina, but have come back strong since with two outstanding defensive efforts against Rhode Island and Nevada to earn victories of just 16 total points allowed combined in those victories. While defense will certainly play an important part in this contest, offense must also find ways to score on its own in order to find success against an Iowa opponent.
As freshman quarterback Nate Stanley continues his recovery from shoulder injuries, senior Alex Padilla may take more of a prominent role this week under center. Though struggling against Northwestern in the first half, Padilla improved in the second half and the team relies heavily on him as they look for ways to continue improving.
Running game issues remain an area of focus for the team. Junior Le'Meke Brockington and sophomore Darius Taylor have shown glimpses of greatness as big-time backs, yet are unable to produce consistent performances for this unit. On offense, starting RT Quinn Carroll and LT Aireontae Ersery have both been recognized by PFF as being essential components.
Cade McNamara has completed 19 of 23 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown during his two starts as Iowa quarterback, giving them an advantage in moving the ball against Minnesota and providing Iowa a greater chance at victory than previous opponents.
