Ohio State had an up and down season last year before turning it around under interim coach Jake Diebler to reach the NCAA Tournament and finish top 10 in Big Ten play, eventually qualifying for NCAA play and making an appearance at this season's Big Ten Tournament tournament. They entered this season as one of the premier programs nationwide and strong contenders to claim national supremacy.

The Penguins had much to build upon after narrowly missing out on NCAA Tournament participation last season, led by their frontcourt. However, this season has proven difficult as they currently sit 322 out of 353, according to KenPom's rating system. Top scoring for them this season has been 6-foot-5 216-pound wing Garrett Covington who averages 12.8 points per game; Naz Bohannon and Felix Okpara are also integral components but there may not be as many options outside these three.
