The UMBC Retrievers men's basketball team represents University of Maryland, Baltimore County in NCAA Division I college basketball competition as a member of America East Conference. Led by fourth-year head coach Jim Ferry, home games for this America East team take place at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Catonsville.
Bryce Johnson scored 23 points to lead UMBC in its America East conference opener against Binghamton on Saturday, but ultimately fell 87-82. Marcus Banks Jr. chipped in 17 points on 3-of-7 shooting from three-point range while graduate student forward Josh Odunowo recorded double figures with 10 points as well.
UMBC has already started off their season strong, winning both games to date and standing at 2-0 ahead of Saturday's matchup with the Highlanders. UMBC are solid +3 underdogs while the over/under total stands at 138.5 points.
NJIT started their conference season off poorly by falling to Loyola Maryland 68-50 on Tuesday night as +3 underdogs but failed to cover. NJIT scored 68 points but were limited to 50 from beyond the arc while also giving up 20 three-point attempts converting only 16%.
UMBC Retrievers have won five of seven meetings against NJIT Highlanders to even out their all-time series 5-5. Last season, each team won on its respective road; but in their inaugural meeting of 2019 at Medgar Evers Stadium this year UMBC came from behind and rallied from behind for an upset 107-51 victory with Quentin Duncan scoring 26 points while connecting on eight triples!
