In its inaugural year as an FBS team, Coastal Carolina made an immediate impact and claimed nine victories and the New Orleans Bowl victory last season. Now the Chanticleers face an arduous task when opening up on the road against Jacksonville State, an experienced squad led by coach Rich Rodriguez that looks poised to challenge for a C-USA championship this year.
Coastal Carolina Gamecocks run the ball just as often as their service academy counterparts, ranking second nationally with 49.8 rushing attempts per game last year (only Army and Navy had more). To remain competitive in conference play, Coastal Carolina must stop running the ball and improve its pass defense - it ranked only 102nd last year for Success Rate!
Both teams boast experienced front sevens, and the Chanticleers will attempt to replace Grayson McCall - who led the nation in passing yards last season - after he moved on to NC State this offseason. Tim Beck has appointed either Ethan Vasko (redshirt freshman from Michigan State transfer Noah Kim) or Noah Kim as quarterbacks of his offense for 2016.
The Gamecocks boast an experienced backfield led by Anwar Lewis and Ron Wiggins who combine to average over 400 yards per game rushing. Three starters return from last season's offensive line which ranked 22nd in PFF rush blocking grade; Chanticleers defensive ends may pose some questions; however returning veterans provide ample experience throughout.
