Tennessee will kickoff their 2016-17 campaign Monday when they visit Big South rival Gardner-Webb at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center. Tennessee is breaking in many new players and welcoming a first-year head coach, yet expectations remain high as one of the SEC's premier programs over recent years.
Last season, Tennessee earned 27 victories and finished fifth in both major national polls to achieve its highest-ever AP top-25 finish under Rick Barnes and second highest in program history. Only three other teams have managed that feat over the last seven seasons - all winning at least 30 games during each of these campaigns!
UT will be without its top four scorers from last season; however, Zakai Zeigler returns as a senior to lead both scoring and assists for his team - on track to become only the sixth SEC player ever to lead both categories - and could easily reach 1,000-point mark this season.
GWU's Runnin' Bulldogs are under first-year coach Jeremy Luther and have suffered an exodus of talent since last season's team. Ademide Badmus returns from the transfer portal as they look to remain competitive this season; along with Anthony Seldan (5.6 points per game at Rice) and Jamaine Mann who both came over from Georgia State last season.
